Where AI Gets Its Information: The Sources ChatGPT and Gemini Actually Trust
When ChatGPT recommends a business, where does that recommendation come from? When Gemini describes your services, what sources did it read?
The answer is less intuitive than you might expect. It is not your website. Not primarily.
The Citation Landscape
Two major studies give us the answer. Otterly AI analyzed over 1 million citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews in early 2026. Profound analyzed 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025. Both found the same pattern.
Community platforms captured 52.5% of all citations. Brand-owned domains captured 47.5%. Reddit is the single most-cited domain across all platforms, followed by Wikipedia, YouTube, and Forbes. The top 5 domains capture 38% of all citations. The top 20 capture 66%.
That means when AI recommends your business, it is more likely citing a Reddit thread, a Wikipedia mention, or a Forbes article than your own website.
Platform-by-Platform Breakdown
ChatGPT
ChatGPT with web search gave brand domains 44.7% of citations. The rest came from community and editorial sources. Profound's data shows Wikipedia accounts for 47.9% of ChatGPT's top-10 cited domains, making it the default knowledge layer. Reddit captures about 1.8% of total citations but is highly concentrated in consumer categories.
ChatGPT's web search is powered by Bing. This means content that ranks well on Bing has an advantage in being retrieved by ChatGPT. Bing's index favors established, well-linked domains. Small businesses with thin web presence are at a structural disadvantage.
Google AI Overviews
Google AI Overviews showed the strongest brand preference: 59.8% of citations went to brand-owned domains. This makes sense because Google has the deepest index of brand websites and favors its own structured data (Google Business Profile, Maps) in its AI responses.
If you have a strong Google presence, Google's AI features are your best channel. But YouTube accounts for 6.3% of Google AI Overview citations, 3x more than in ChatGPT. Video content matters more for Google AI than other platforms.
Perplexity
Perplexity gave brand domains only 28.9% of citations, the lowest of any platform. Profound's data confirms: Reddit accounts for 46.7% of Perplexity's top-10 cited domains. It draws heavily from community forums, editorial content, and aggregator sites. If your business depends on Perplexity visibility, third-party mentions and editorial coverage are essential.
Perplexity also shows every citation inline, making it the most transparent platform. Users can see exactly where the recommendation came from. This transparency means the quality and credibility of the citing source matters to the end user, not just the AI.
The Reddit Factor
Reddit's dominance in AI citations is one of the most discussed findings in AI search research. Scrunch calls it "the Reddit paradox": Reddit is the most-cited source overall, but its relevance varies dramatically by industry.
For consumer products, travel, and technology, Reddit threads are heavily cited. A subreddit discussion about "best hotels in Bali" or "best project management tools for startups" will often appear in AI answers. The conversational, opinionated format of Reddit aligns well with how AI platforms generate recommendations.
For B2B services, professional services, and niche industries, Reddit is far less relevant. AI platforms cite industry publications, comparison sites, and professional directories instead.
The implication: do not chase Reddit mentions blindly. Check whether Reddit is actually a significant citation source for your specific industry and category.
What This Means for Your Strategy
Your website is necessary but not sufficient
Having a well-structured website with schema markup and clear content is the foundation. But AI platforms do not rely on your website alone. They cross-reference with third-party sources. If your website says one thing and every other source says something different, the AI trusts the crowd.
Third-party mentions compound
Directory listings, editorial mentions, review platform presence, community discussions. Each one adds a citation surface that AI can reference. The businesses that appear most frequently in AI answers are not necessarily the ones with the best websites. They are the ones with the broadest presence across the sources AI trusts.
Different platforms reward different sources
Google AI favors your own domain and Google properties. ChatGPT favors a mix of brand and community sources. Perplexity favors editorial and community content. A multi-platform AI visibility strategy requires presence across all these source types.
The Source Audit
For your specific business, the relevant citation sources depend on your industry. Here is how to identify them:
- Query AI platforms. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask. Note which sources they cite in their answers.
- Check Perplexity specifically. Because Perplexity shows inline citations, it reveals exactly which sources AI trusts for your category.
- Audit your presence on those sources. Are you listed? Is the information accurate? Is your profile complete?
- Identify gaps. If a competitor is cited from a source where you have no presence, that is a gap worth closing.
- Monitor changes. Citation sources shift as AI platforms update their retrieval methods. What Perplexity cited last month may not be what it cites next month.
The businesses that understand where AI gets its information have a structural advantage. They are not optimizing blindly. They are building presence on the specific sources that drive AI recommendations in their category.
